Description

Without migration, the identity of our city cannot be understood — much less that of a neighbourhood like Zaramaga. This mural is a tribute to all the people who left their places of origin to help build Vitoria-Gasteiz.
We worked with concepts and feelings in constant contrast: transit against home, road against roots, nostalgia for what is left behind alongside hope for what is received… because perhaps these are not opposing feelings, but two sides of the same situation.
Hence the design combines references to the home — a pattern based on the decorative motifs of houses from the era — with elements rescued from industrial processes, evoking the journey of all these people: recycled tyres.
The mural aims to provoke a surprise: to bring an intimate element of the home into the street. The piece of pattern, tilted and in motion, is slightly out of alignment — because that is how we feel when facing a new reality. But as you walk around it, you discover new nuances: it changes colour. This is a mural made to be seen in movement — one that vibrates, that steps out of the wall, that celebrates colour and diversity of origin.
And finally, as you draw closer, you discover that the pattern is woven from a multitude of surnames, in different handwritings: families of many kinds who came from there, who are from here.
