Description

Uzta / The Harvest was the last IMVG mural. Created in the summer of 2019 in the Ariznabarra neighbourhood, it was the outcome of a socio-artistic process that gathered the stories and experiences of local residents, along with a documentary video that accompanied the mural.
A diverse group of people investigated and worked with residents to transform what they gathered into art. They created platforms for exchange, collected anecdotes and stories, and all of it ended up illustrating a playful, absurd, and funny mural that reminds us that life is a game, that chance and experience mark our path, and that above all, we are far more than we appear from the outside. Like a matryoshka, people always have many layers, many inner "selves" that make us more complex, more interesting, and more surprising.
The mural is composed as a kind of invented still life. Its main elements are:
 

• An open matryoshka, decorated with elements the group identified as things that connect us to nature: water, constellations, landscape…

• Small paper notes with phrases "coming out" of the matryoshka. These are some of the phrases the participants gathered in the neighbourhood: "I have a sack full of anecdotes," "the neighbourhood could be magical," "connections between people," or "women inside women."

• A board game in the style of "Snakes and Ladders." Its squares contain elements that emerged in the meetings, representing things that matter along the road of life: culture and Basque, music, sweetness, looking through a window, fire, magic.

• Surreal elements: a ladder and a slide that "escape" the board; the shadow of the matryoshka projected onto the wall as though the figure were complete; and the real, golden matryoshka hidden on the roof.

All these elements make the mural a magical and surrealist work — a compendium of ideas and emotions that in some way capture that "snapshot" of the collective creation process.
Alongside the mural, a series of videos was produced that captures the serious and the most light-hearted moments of the process. We get to know some of the people who live and work in the neighbourhood: we come closer, we laugh, they make us think… we glimpse something in their gaze and want to know more. To open every matryoshka we come across.
Uzta / The Harvest was created with the collaboration of many neighbourhood associations and collectives, as well as the support of volunteers: Hogar San José, CEIP Miguel de Cervantes, Centro Ocupacional de Ariznabarra, Centro Sociocultural de Mayores de Ariznabarra, Down Araba, Club Deportivo Ariznabarra, Educadoras y Educadores de Calle de Zabalgana y Ariznabarra, and Escuela para Adultos Paulo Freire.
