Description

The starting theme of the workshop was the elderly.
Zaramaga is a working-class neighbourhood "of a lifetime," populated by immigrants — originally from other Spanish provinces, and more recently from other countries. Its population is ageing, industry no longer provides work for the young, and many young people seek opportunities elsewhere.
During the two weeks of the design phase, the team — artists, volunteers, and the Brigadas de la Brotxa — did fieldwork to gather the opinions and concerns of the neighbourhood's older residents. From that material, the mural gradually took shape. In addition to collecting ideas, portrait photography of residents was also part of the process.
Colour palette

• Gold yellow: the neighbourhood's "golden age."
• Red: passion, love, the identity of its people.
• Blue: the photographic technique of cyanotype.

Composition

• Trompe-l'œil: multiple layers, multiple experiences, the passage of time.
• Circular dynamism: the cycle of life.

Elements

• Poppies: fragility.
• Wheat: tone, seed, sustenance, origins.
• Portraits: passion, love, the open-mindedness of the elderly, neighbourhood identity, thought.
• Tree: roots, the cycle of life, autumn (old age represented as autumn).
• Paper: the passage of time.
• Phrase: surrealism, youthful spirit, sparkle, attitude — that magic older people insist on holding onto, vitality…

 

Techniques used

This workshop was directed by two artists specialising in very different techniques. Eva Mena is a painter who has worked in muralism for years, also playing an important role in the graffiti scene. Nahikari Mora comes primarily from photography, in particular traditional (chemical) photography; she is also founder of ENELU, an association that promotes the social and participatory dimensions of photography.
The workshop was carried out between December 2014 and January 2015. Due to weather conditions, it was painted on technical fabric, which was installed permanently on the façade in the spring of 2015.
One of the project's innovations was the use of photochemical techniques (cyanotype) on a mural surface — the first time this technique had been used on a mural.
