Description

Auzoan Hazi Hezi Bizi means, in Basque, "to grow, educate, and live in the neighbourhood."
It is a tribute to the social commitment of the parents' association at the Ramón Bajo public school, its teaching staff, and the collectives, associations, and neighbourhood residents who were essential to the transformation of the school — inside and out.
Over the past decade, the school launched a new educational project guided by the use of Basque and by a porous relationship between the school and the neighbourhood. This transformation affected the education of the students, the way teachers worked, social relationships with the surrounding community, and even the very architecture of the building and its spaces.
This mural is the culmination of that transformation and gives outward form to its aims: that girls and boys grow and are educated in harmony, with joy, and relate to one another collaboratively to build a better neighbourhood.
One of the workshop participants wrote a beautiful account of the whole process and the emotions lived during the six weeks of the workshop.
