Description

The mural takes as its starting point the four elements — water, air, earth, and fire — and interweaves them with the identifying features of Narbaiza. As a unifying base across the entire composition, one of the symbols from the village's baptismal font is reproduced as a decorative border, tonally divided to accompany each element.
The chromatic contrast with the natural surroundings makes the mural stand out both from around the water tank and from a distance.
Fire: evoked through the New Year's Eve tradition of the quema de los porreros — straw figures that are burned to see out the old year and welcome in the new.
Water: represented by the fountain on the road to Agurain, with two scenes facing each other. On one side, a scene from the past: a shepherd watering his flock. On the other, a contemporary scene: the village txikis playing with the water. Two uses, two eras, one fountain.
Earth: captured through the village's most recognisable architecture and its traditional pottery.
Air: the figure of the old windmill is transformed into a child's pinwheel — the kind the txikis use to play — same form, different colours — bringing memory and play together.
In each of the four elements, the passage of time appears differently: sometimes subtle, as in fire; sometimes direct, as in water; sometimes through the transformation of something old into something contemporary, as in air; or through timeless elements like architecture and pottery, in earth.
This mural, like all those in the municipality of San Millán, was sponsored by its Town Hall.
