Muralism as a tool for bringing communities together and closing distances!
The Alegría-Dulantzi mural was the outcome of a collaborative effort between residents of the village. Together, they searched for an image that could convey ideas of coexistence and peace.
The workshop was funded by Fundazioa 2012, a Basque Government programme celebrating 2012 as the "Year of Cultures for Peace and Freedom."
The mural features ears of wheat and poppies, along with a central figure: a woman throwing straw into the air. As it falls, the straw transforms into words — love, respeto (respect), bakea (peace, in Basque), and bienvenidos (welcome) in Arabic. As a curious detail, the mural's background reproduces the motif of ceramic tiles found above the door of a nearby convent.
